Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
